Shouln't you turn off your a/c B4 engine shut-off?
A previous question was resolved with the answer of "no" basically and I'd like to put the question out there again. In my experience as a professional driver I have been told by several mechanics that it is important to turn it off due to a clutch within the a/c system that will wear much faster or become damaged by leaving it on all the time because of what happens when you start the car.
Or does this question have to be more specific as to what kind of vehicle we're talking about? Compact car vs. let's say...a motor coach or 18 wheeler tractor? What's the verdict?
I'd like to get an answer from a certified mechanic if possible...no offense.
The clutch on the compressor is a very hard steel. You won't wear out the clutch, but over time the electro-magnet will get weak. This is what makes the clutch go out. The starter on the car won't know the difference because it is a very small gear turning a much bigger one.
The reason to shut off the a/c before the engine is let the moisture that has built up around the evaporator core dissipate. If you shut off the air then turn up the fan on a warm day, you will notice a fog coming from the vents.
